Reframe your ostomy

Instead of seeing it as something to hide, remind yourself: it's a tool that supports your health and gives you a full, active life. It's a sign of strength, not weakness. And you get to decide how and when to share your story.

Disclosure levels and sample phrases

How much you share is always up to you. A useful guide for three levels:

Low disclosure — in public, or with strangers, when you don't want detail: "Excuse me, I need to step out for a moment."

Medium disclosure — for acquaintances and casual social settings: "I'm still learning what foods work best for me after surgery, so I ate before coming. Everything looks amazing!"

High disclosure — for trusted friends, or when you need direct help: "Can you help me find the restroom? My ostomy pouch has leaked and I need to clean up. Would you be able to help me find an extra set of clothes?"

Navigating food and social events

Turning down food can feel awkward. Two tactful options:

"Everything looks great — I'm just sticking with what makes me feel best today."

"Thank you so much for inviting me. After my surgery I'm still figuring out what foods work best for me, so I ate before I came. Everything looks delicious!"

You don't owe anyone a full explanation — but you do deserve to feel comfortable, respected and confident in your body. Your ostomy is part of your story, not the whole story.

Talking to family, friends and colleagues

Some people choose to be open, others prefer privacy. Both are fine.

Family and friends: "I had surgery that saved my life, and my ostomy allows me to stay healthy and active."
Work: "I have a medical condition that requires accommodations, such as extra restroom breaks."
Dating: honesty builds trust — explain your ostomy when you feel comfortable.

Why a nickname helps

Giving your ostomy a name or code word can make conversations lighter and less awkward, for you and for others. It reduces discomfort for people unfamiliar or squeamish about medical terms, normalizes it for you, lets you signal you need a break without explaining, and brings some personality to something usually seen only clinically.

Ideas: funny names like "The Boss" or "Captain Pouch"; cute code names like "my sidekick," "Pouchy," "my +1"; or discreet phrases such as "time for a pit stop."

Gauge the comfort level of the person you're talking to
Keep it simple if needed: "I have a medical pouch I take care of sometimes."
Use humor if it suits you — laughter defuses tension
Let them ask questions; curiosity is better than silence

It's about confidence and timing. Choose a relaxed moment, keep it simple, and answer questions honestly. The right person will accept you for you.

When to bring it up. Not the first date, unless it comes up naturally. Before things get physical, especially if intimacy may involve your ostomy. When trust is building and the person feels safe, kind and emotionally mature. Ask yourself: does this person deserve to know this part of me now?

How to start. You don't need to give a medical lecture:

"I want to share something with you that's part of my health journey."

"I have an ostomy, which means I have a small medical pouch that helps my body function after surgery. It's not a big deal to me now, but I wanted you to know."

Follow up with reassurance — "I'm really healthy now, and this has just become part of my life." "It hasn't stopped me from doing anything I love." "If you have questions, I'm happy to answer them."

How they respond tells you a lot. A kind, curious or open-minded response is a green flag. Dismissiveness or disinterest in learning more is valuable information about their emotional maturity.

Building comfort and confidence

Practice saying it aloud, in a mirror or with a friend, to find your words
Decide how much detail to share — you don't have to tell everything at once
Use humor or lightness if it suits your style
